Karate-Do What is Karate-Do?
What is Karate-Do? Print E-mail
The simple explanation of Karate-Do is that it is a martial art that depends basically on the human body, with hand-to-hand combats that do not involve the use of weapons.

It is a MARTIAL ART (BU-JUTSU) that uses every part of the body logically and effectively with movements of Tsuki, Uchi, Nague and Gyaki, etc., as handed down in secrecy on the island of Okinawa to present day.

There are several misunderstandings of this martial art. The question is often asked: how long do I need to practice before I can break wooden boards or roof slates? There are also those who train with the idea of breaking muscles and bones and work specifically on their legs and hands, proudly breaking roof slates and wooden boards to boast their skills.

However, true karate is not only a martial art or technique, but also training with one basic purpose: attaining the dignity of a knight (a nobleman), polishing his “Kunshi no Ken” and “Karate ni sente nashi” character. This teaching shows the philosophy of the art and no student should ever forget it.
